Tommy Smith/ Maria Rud: Luminescence

Luminescence is a collaboration between the visible artist Maria Rud and saxophonist Tommy Smith that’s working within the historic St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh as a part of the Edinburgh Fringe.

Maria Rud was born in Moscow. She grew up surrounded by music – her Ukrainian-born mom was a composer – and from an early age she found that music instructed pictures. “That’s the best way I hear music,” she says, “by visible pictures fairly than simply the sound and the notes.”  

Rud and Smith met at a reception in the Nationwide Museum of Scotland, a two-minute stroll from St Giles’, and after conversing for a couple of minutes they agreed that they need to work collectively in some unspecified time in the future. They first collaborated when Smith, the creative director of the Scottish Nationwide Jazz Orchestra, invited Rud to create pictures in response to the Orchestra’s dedications to saxophone pioneers together with Albert Ayler and Ornette Coleman of their The place Rivers Meet live performance collection in Might 2021. They subsequently premiered Luminescence in a single efficiency in St Giles’ final November.
