Wako are described of their press supplies as ‘4 Norwegian improvisers with an utter disregard for purism, and an virtually reckless perspective in direction of taking musical dangers.’ They’ve simply recorded their seventh album. I requested saxophonist Martin Myhre Olsen to speak about their upcoming London live performance: “There will likely be new music! We’re very excited to have the possibility to discover materials from our upcoming album, that’s going to be launched within the fall, along with a choice of ‘hits’ from earlier albums.”

In keeping with Olsen, their subsequent album is, in essence, “a follow-up of our earlier acclaimed launch Ut Av Det Nye, the place we wished to create an album that’s simply good, that little gem of an album you would placed on at any time. What got here out of that was the necessity to make an intimate acoustic jazz quartet recording that would seize the indefinable spirit of Wako most purely, and on the similar time mirror us getting older and maturing as a band.”

Thought-about by many to be one of the dynamic and progressive teams on right now’s jazz scene, with a stable fan base and recognition from critics close to and much, Wako are actually positioned on the forefront of Nordic jazz. I requested Olsen what makes their live shows a particular expertise: “We’ve been working intently collectively as a collective for a decade now, growing and exploring our very personal language and method to music, within the studio and on the highway. The scope of Wako’s music is at all times fastidiously adjusted to the viewers, atmosphere, and musical materials, which signifies that the live shows are distinctive experiences.”

And what are Wako’s primary musical influences, if any? “What we treasure in Wako as a bunch, is that each band member is inspired to carry their musical influences on the time into the music we play. Whether or not or not it’s John Coltrane, Rashaan Roland Kirk, The Beatles, or Nick Drake, we’re at all times going to be impressed by nice music and collectively attempt to be ourselves.”

We’ve been in London solely 3 times in 10 years… We’ve very fond recollections from our first live performance at Jazz Café POSK! The heartwarming welcome from the viewers and employees made the night very particular for us, and that’s why we wished to return again for a 2nd live performance… and who is aware of after we’ll make it again?”
